...more like "Little Bill"

Well, there wasn't much to it after all. The "eye" just passed by south of Halifax...so long Bill...
Nevertheless, thousands of Nova Scotian's are without power. Surprise Surprise...

Bag-O-Wind Bill ???

According to NOAA, there's less than a 20% chance of hurricane force winds reaching this locale. However the apparent state of growth on our power-lines, the fact that Scotia Power is a private company, and the eco-freak reluctance to employ the old scorched-earth approach to keep the lines clear, I'm expecting power outages. In September of 2003, after Hurricane Juan struck, we were a good 3 days with no power. This time, thanks to inverters, batteries, solar panels, and a small generator, I'm hoping to be able to keep the food frozen. Due to the time of year, heat is not a concern. My old Winnebago will provide additional propane fridge and stove, water/sewer if required.
See here for some preparation photos..
Lessons learned from Juan:
  • grind up some coffee beans now !
  • fill empty freezer space with ice blocks
  • a 5" b/w TV is handy
  • get propane !
  • candles are nice to have too

Lahave River Campground

A few days of blistering 33+ C heat...wow !! Like many Newfoundlanders, I've taken a vow not to complain about a few days of warmth, for it will soon vaporize. This weekend found us at Lahave River Campground. A nice spot for sure, and we stayed in the infamous TeePee. That reminds of one of my Dad's groaners: Did you hear about the Indian who drank over 100 cups of Tea??
He drowned in his "tea pee"...

Irwin Lake Chalets

What a summer it's been so far. Busy but not hectic. The boys are away at Youth Camp this week. We decided to run away for a couple of days to Irwin Lake Chalets. I can't say enough nice things about this place. All of my favorite keywords were present: log cabin, woodstove, jacuzzi, BBQ, wifey, to name a few :)

The best laid plans...

We intended on going to Rissers Beach for the weekend, but the old Winnebago had other plans. Not yet sure what's wrong but we managed to backfire our way home on Friday evening. Saturday was such a nice day we had to go with Plan B...canoeing and splashing around in Long Lake again...more photos here...

IVECO...

This beauty has been roaming around Central Newfoundland lately. I just grabbed some photos of it for fun...
